Artist's Statement
As a photographer, I work intuitively. I seldom ask myself why I am aiming the lens at a particular subject. I may think, “move a bit this way or that” or, “use a different lens,” but that is it.
For me the challenge of a landscape is in its structure and form. How can I capture what it is that makes it stunning, beautiful and essential to preserve? I often travel for hours, looking, watching, observing, until I find the “right” place. Time, ambience, light and good fortune are the critical elements. When I find such a place, the hours pass like minutes. It is a magical, transformative experience.
I believe in serendipity – in life, in art and especially in my work. At the same time, I have been fortunate to be able to return many times to the places where I have found my inspiration, whether it is landscapes in Italy, Sardinia or Provence, street scenes in lower Manhattan or, more recently, the subways and urban transport of Berlin and Turin. Each time these familiar locations offer excitingly different prospects that I am eager to capture in their new revelations. Still serendipitous moments!
My cityscapes of Berlin and Turin take me into digital color work and allow me to express a gritty reality or a gentle lyricism.
