From Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians to the north Pole

About

This work is a from a 52 day trip on the USCG icebreaker Healy, a National Research Foundation supported research trip as part of the Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS). The SAS is a multi-nation cruise-based project with the goal of “providing a unique baseline, which will allow scientists to track climate change and its impacts as they unfold in the Arctic over the coming years, decades and centuries.”

The ice images were made during our five weeks in the pack ice. Most are of young or first year ice: Shuga, Nilas, and Grease Ice. The ice was thinner and there were many “leads” open water, even very close to the North Pole
